Sunday August 28th - The Routemaster Association will be holding a Rally at Old Warden aerodrome, Biggleswade, Beds, SG18 9EP. The Rally will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the introduction into service of the RML. All vintage buses & coaches will be welcome, particularly ex-London Transport types, and an award will be given for the best turned out RML on the day.
Old Warden aerodrome is the home of the famous Shuttleworth collection of World War 1 fighter planes and replicas, and if the weather is kind, examples from the collection can usually be seen flying during the summer weekends.
Entry forms for vehicles and stallholders are downloadable from an adjacent entry in the News section of our website.
We can now say that there will be no charge for any bus coming along, and no charge for any passengers they are carrying.
People arriving by car will be charged £3 per car, regardless of the number of occupants. However this fee will be redeemable against entry to either the Shuttleworth Collection, the Swiss Garden attraction, or a main meal from the Airfield Restaurant / Cafe.
Assuming the weather remains reasonably dry in August a very large grassed area, adjacent to a walled garden, will be available for buses and stallholders. There will also be a large car parking area situated between the buses and the airfield runway fence, and this location, between buses and hopefully vintage flying activity, seems a pleasant place for anyone planning on a picnic!
Should adverse weather require us to use hard standing for the buses, this alternative has been arranged with the Airfield authorities, adjacent to the main aircraft hangars.
How to get there? The following link will take you the Shuttleworth Collection's website and map page Old Warden - How to find us Map
Basically road traffic will probably find the A1 from North or South the best route, with an exit onto the B658 as you approach Biggleswade. A roundabout about a mile down this road has an exit that departs from the B658, and this road leads to Old Warden Airfield, on your left after about another mile. The route from the A1 is suitably signposted to the Shuttleworth Collection.
